ABOUT THE EVENT

The retreat will be held at The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa in Hilton Head, South Carolina, where you’ll experience two days of workshops, roundtable discussions and CLE presentations on key legal issues within the industry. You can look forward to evening events and social activities, where you’ll have the opportunity to interact with friends and colleagues in a relaxed setting. In order to prepare for your visit, please review the important information below and complete the registration form by Friday, October 15.

HILTON HEAD ACTIVITIES

Wednesday, October 27

The following activities depart FROM HOTEL LOBBY AT 12:45 PM. 

Golf at Port Royal

  • Barony Course 
  • Tee times starting at 1:00 pm (boxed lunches will be provided). We will depart from the hotel lobby around 12:45 pm.
  • Nestled along the Atlantic coastline on the northwestern point of Hilton Head Island, the Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club is located in the pristine Port Royal Plantation along with the luxurious oceanfront Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa. 

Tennis

  • The Port Royal Racquet Club has been ranked as one of the "Top 50 Greatest U.S. Tennis Resorts" by Tennis Magazine and has received the coveted five stars by World Tennis for its award-winning tennis complex. Featuring Har-Tru clay and Nova hard courts, as well as one of the "Top Five Tennis Resort Pro Shops" by Tennis Buyers Guide, tennis enthusiasts are sure to enjoy a game where the courts have been graced by tennis legends and superstars. 
  • Need some instruction? Private lessons and clinics are available before taking the court. Be sure to indicate your needs on the registration form. 

THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES DEPART FROM THE HOTEL LOBBY AT 1:00 PM: 

Kayak, Dolphin & Nature Tour

  • Kayak through the tidal creeks and salt marshes of Hilton Head. Kayaking is a fun, safe and easy trip. No experience is necessary to enjoy this water based "nature hike" through the beautiful creeks and inlets. 
  • Your naturalist guide will choose one of several interesting routes that offer beautiful views of the Lowcountry landscape and an opportunity to observe the incredible variety of wildlife that make this area home: Dolphins, ospreys, herons, bald eagles and many more. All kayaks (single and doubles) are safe, stable and comfortable. Kayaking tours are led by knowledgeable, personable, interpretive naturalist guides and sure to be a memorable Hilton Head nature tour. 
  • Duration:  2 hours 

The Outback

  • A can’t-miss excursion! Begin your adventure with a scenic boat cruise from Shelter Cove Marina through saltmarsh creeks en route to a private and secluded sea island. Your captain will choose one of several interesting routes that offers beautiful views of the Lowcountry landscape and an opportunity to observe the incredible variety of wildlife that make this area home: Dolphins, ospreys, herons, bald eagles and many more. 
  • At the kayak outpost located on remote Page Island, you will be comfortably fitted into a safe and stable kayak for a pleasant tour through remote tidal creeks. Winding through the most pristine estuaries in the area, you’ll paddle the same creeks traveled by the Native Americans that inhabited these islands hundreds of years ago. The scenery is breathtaking. If you do not wish to paddle, you can enjoy Page Island’s miles of nature trails, relaxing hammocks or fishing from the dock. 
  • Duration:  4 hours 

Craig Cat Adventure

  • Enjoy this two-and-a-half-hour tour from Hilton Head starting at Shelter Cove Marina and going out to Broad Creek over to Harbour Town, then to Daufuskie Island, and through the backwater of Bull Creek to the May River, and back on the Calibogue Sound to Shelter Cove. Approximately 20 miles, the exact route will vary depending on the height of the waves in the different areas. On this exploration of Hilton Head’s waterways and marshlands, visitors might spot some sea birds, dolphins, manatee and other sea life during the trip. 
  • At the start of the trip, your guide will give a short class and let the participants practice for a bit before leaving the marina area.  Two guests will go in each boat and get to drive their own boat.  The guide goes in a separate boat to keep you safe and guide you to exciting and interesting areas.
  • Guests must be 18 years old with a valid driver’s license to drive the boat and at least five years of age to be a passenger. There is a weight limit of 300 pounds per person. 
  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • Attire:  Casual attire that may get wet with water shoes, sandals or flip-flops and a light jacket is recommended if the weather is cooler

Visit to Harbour Town

  • Surrounding The Sea Pines Resort's picturesque yacht basin, Harbour Town features an extraordinary selection of fine apparel and home décor boutiques, custom gift and craft shops, signature jewelry shops and one-of-a-kind art galleries. You'll also find a variety of top-rated restaurants and casual outdoor cafes serving fresh seafood, perfectly prepared steaks, grilled sandwiches, salads, classic children's fare, handcrafted specialty cocktails and more.
  • Recreational activities abound on the Harbour Town waterfront, as well. Boats depart regularly for dolphin watching excursions, adventure and dinner cruises, kayak tours and charter fishing trips. You can also partake in the many watersports offered in Harbour Town, and world-class golf and tennis are just steps away. Above it all, the historic Harbour Town Lighthouse, with its iconic red and white stripes, provides a stunning aerial view of the marina for those who climb to the top.

Paddleboard

  • Enjoy the fun, fitness and beauty of the fastest growing watersport in the world! This introductory program with professional instructors will familiarize you with equipment, safety and paddle strokes. No experience is necessary—you’ll be cruising in no time. 
  • Duration: 90 minutes

Fishing

  • Come and fish the beautiful waters of the South Carolina Lowcountry! Hilton Head’s legendary salt marsh is the largest breeding ground of game fish in North America. Seasonal species include tarpon, redfish, trout, shark, cobia, king and Spanish mackerel. 
  • Each charter captain is dedicated to providing a safe, productive and memorable day. Whether a beginner or seasoned angler, your guide will share our deep knowledge and experience to ensure great fishing.  
  • The boats in our fleet include 26’ power cats and V hull fishing boats. 
  • Duration:  4  hours

Dolphin Eco Tour

  • Take in the sights and sounds of the beautiful South Carolina Lowcountry on this relaxing boat cruise. Depart from Shelter Cove Marina for a casual exploration of the picturesque Broad Creek and surrounding waterways in search of some of this area’s most fascinating wildlife. There is something special to see at every turn. The tidal creeks offer great opportunities to see local and migratory dolphin populations. Distinctive behaviors of the local dolphin are so fascinating that researchers and scientists have sought out this locale for years. Herons, ibis, wood storks, bald eagles and ospreys dot the landscape. This tour is led by a United States Coast Guard licensed captain who, as an experienced Interpretive Naturalist, will be able to share an intrinsic knowledge of the habitat and the processes that take place within it. 
  • Duration:  90 minutes

Bike Tour

  • Hilton Head Island is a bicyclist paradise. This interpretive tour will take a loop route that will mix paved bike paths, back roads and beach cruising all at an easy pace on flat elevation.  
  • Your guide will lead you to significant historic sites, fantastic nature based vistas, woodlands, wetlands and the beach.  Simply a great day on Hilton Head! 
  • Duration:  2 hours

The retreat will begin on Tuesday evening, October 26 and conclude Friday, October 29. We are pleased to include accommodations for you at The Westin Hilton Head Resort & Spa. McDermott will be making all hotel reservations on your behalf and confirmation numbers will be sent closer to the event date.

Airport Transportation

We are pleased to offer round trip ground transportation from Hilton Head Island Airport or Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Please plan to arrive on Tuesday, October 26 and depart anytime on Friday, October 29.

FAQs

  • Casual attire is suggested for CLE presentations and evening dinners.
  • Attire for afternoon outings is dependent on the event.
  • The average high temperature is 77 degrees with the overnight low in the 50s.  


Firm COVID-19 Protocol

  • We will hold the CLE presentations indoors, at which masks will be mandatory for attendees (though presenters will be without a mask). Additionally, the room will be set with social distancing in mind. 
  • We ask everyone to monitor their own health closely and to please stay home if they are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19.  
  • We will continue to monitor COVID-19 developments, including CDC and WHO guidelines, over the next few weeks and adapt our onsite approach as needed.

Minimum continuing legal education (MCLE) credit is pending in California, Illinois and New York. A Multi-Jurisdiction Certificate of Attendance will be made available to participants requesting MCLE credit in all other jurisdictions. To be eligible to earn a CLE certificate, you must attend the entire session. Credit for partial attendance will not be provided.
